Packing Without Kids vs. Packing With Kids

We are leaving for Reno/Tahoe in less than 72 hours! Quick, do all the things! All the planning, packing, cleaning ('cause coming home to a messy house is the worst), and eat all of the perishables. I haven't slept in weeks because taking any trip, anywhere with kids, is the most daunting. Parents, remember before kids how easy it was? No? Let me remind you.

Throwback to Kenley's last Tahoe road trip in 2014.

Packing Without Kids vs. Packing With Kids:

When to Pack

Without Kids - Make a packing list the day before, and pack your bag the night before (around 9pm).

With Kids - Make a packing list 2 weeks prior, go to Target to pick up any items needed, start packing 4 days prior, make another Target run for what you forgot the first time, and have bags completely packed (at least the kids' bags) 2-3 days prior.

Amount of Items to Pack

Without Kids - The exact amount of outfits needed (7 days = 7 outfits, or less if you re-wear) plus toiletries.

With Kids - Bring at least twice the amount of outfits needed for kids (7 days = 14+ outfits), and 2 extra outfits for mom in case one of the kids throws up on her on the plane or car ride. Pack for any possible weather. Swimsuits plus snow coats and water shoes plus snow boots. Last week it snowed in Tahoe, this week it's in the 90's. Tahoe, you're crazy. Pack diapers, extra undies for potty training kids, stuffed animals, blankets, bedtime books, and toiletries (don't forget yours!). Plus headbands/bows/clips/kids jewelry/hats and any other accessory your child will throw a tantrum over because you for got to pack their sparkly polka dot hair bow.

Amount of Bags

Without Kids - One small carry on size piece of luggage and a purse.

With Kids - At least one giant suitcase, a carry on size suitcase, your mom purse, a small purse (if you get lucky enough to go out sans kids), a diaper bag, and a stroller.

What to Bring on the Road or in the Plane

Without Kids - Phone and charger, music play list, plus beef jerky from 7-11.

Without Kids - Go on Pinterest at least a week before leaving and buy or make all the things - playdoh, stickers, new crayons, books, surprise toy bag, road trip bingo, popsicle stick alphabet matching, magnets, lacing cards, a cookie sheet (to use as a table), and separate bins to hold it all in. Plus enough snacks to feed them for a week 'cause you refuse to eat at all of the McDonald's along Highway 395. Especially when your 5 year old is a vegetarian and only wants the fries and a toy. Also, ipads filled with movies and new game apps. Don't forget the charger! Plus whatever you need.

Okay, I'm exhausted writing this. Excuse me while I go pack and make a 3rd trip to Target.

Another one from Kenley's last trip to Tahoe. Right before she decided to go skinny dipping in the lake and walk thru a wedding reception naked.
